Three Tips to Get Your Car Winter Weather Ready at DeFOUW Automotive

The summer months are firmly in the rearview mirror, and as the leaves continue to fall in Lafayette, we move ever closer to being able to utter that famous Game of Thrones phrase. "Winter is coming."

No, humanity won't have to be facing off against the dead in a fight for survival around Crawfordsville, but it will have to be prepared. Our vehicles are our lifeline to many aspects of our daily existence, most notably our jobs. If you don't want to find yourself on the side of the road during your morning commute near West Lafayette, you'll want to do these three things to ensure your car, truck, van, or SUV is ready for the frigid winter months.

1.) Change Your Oil

First things first, if it's been a while, it's a good idea to change your oil. Outside of the fact that it's just smart routine maintenance, you should swap to a thinner oil during the winter, so that it is better able to circulate in colder temperatures.

2.) Check and Readjust Your Coolant to Water Ratio

This one is critical, as you don't want your coolant to turn to ice when the temperature dips below freezing. You'll want a 60/40 ratio of coolant to water, as the added coolant will take over and keep the water from freezing. Of course, we can top off and readjust your coolant levels for you with absolute precision.

3.) Check Your Battery and Replace it if Necessary

One of the best ways to test the integrity of your battery is to wait until the dead of winter to see if your car still turns on. If it does, congratulations! Your battery is still solid. If not, well….

If you'd rather not take that chance, you can bring in to our service center, and we'll test the voltage for you. If it's low, we can replace it for you easily.
